The October Deadline: Why Some Students Have Far Less Time Than They Think
The standard UCAS deadline is 13 January at 18:00 UK time. But for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, and Oxbridge, the deadline is 15 October. That is three months earlier. And it does not move.
Most international families discover the October deadline at one of two points. Either they find out early enough to do something about it. Or they find out in September of Year 13, when their child has six weeks left before the most important deadline in their application.
This article exists to make sure you are in the first group.
Two Deadlines. One UCAS System.
UCAS operates two main deadlines for undergraduate applications.
The standard deadline is 13 January at 18:00 UK time. This applies to the vast majority of UK university courses and the vast majority of subjects. Students applying for English, Economics, History, Engineering, Computer Science, and most other degrees submit by this date.
The early deadline is 15 October at 18:00 UK time. This applies exclusively to four categories of course:
Medicine
Dentistry
Veterinary Science
All courses at Oxford and Cambridge
These categories share one thing in common: they are the most competitive undergraduate courses in the UK admissions system. The earlier deadline is not arbitrary. It exists because these applications require more from both the applicant and the institution, and both need more time to process properly.
Law does not fall under the October deadline, despite being one of the most competitive subjects. Law applications follow the standard 13 January deadline. However, LNAT deadlines for some universities sit in December and early January, meaning preparation must still begin well in advance.
What the October Deadline Actually Means in Practice
The October deadline is not simply a date by which a form is submitted. It is the end point of a preparation process that, for competitive applicants, should have begun the previous academic year.
Consider what needs to be in place by 15 October for a Medicine applicant:
The UCAT must already have been taken. Registration opens in May. The test runs July through September. Results are submitted as part of the UCAS application in October. There is no opportunity to resit within the same cycle.
The personal statement must be complete. For Medicine, this is a three-part document under the new 2026 UCAS format, requiring 4,000 characters that demonstrate clinical curiosity, relevant academic preparation, and meaningful work experience. Writing this well takes months.
Work experience must already have been accumulated and reflected upon. Most medical schools expect clinical shadowing across different healthcare settings. This cannot be arranged and completed in October.
University choices must be finalised. A Medicine applicant typically applies to four medical schools and one alternative course. Choosing the right four requires research into UCAT score thresholds, offer conditions, interview formats, and course structures at each institution.
For an Oxbridge applicant, the picture is similar. Admissions tests (ESAT, TARA, TMUA depending on subject) must be sat in the window of 12 to 16 October 2026. Written work submissions are required for some courses. The personal statement must demonstrate a level of intellectual depth that takes months to build authentically.
By the time an October deadline applicant begins Year 13 in September, they have approximately six weeks before the deadline closes. Everything that can be done in advance should already be done.
The Timeline That Actually Works
For a student targeting Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, or Oxbridge, here is the preparation timeline that gives a realistic chance of a competitive application.
Year 11 (age 15 to 16)
Subject choices that meet entry requirements are confirmed. For Medicine: Chemistry is essential; Biology is strongly recommended by most medical schools. For Oxbridge: the right subjects for the specific course are identified and selected. A wrong subject choice at this stage cannot easily be corrected.
A general awareness of the pathway begins. This does not mean high-pressure preparation; it means the family understands what direction they are heading in and what that direction requires.
Year 12 (age 16 to 17)
Super-curricular engagement develops. Reading beyond the syllabus, engaging with ideas in the subject area, building the kind of intellectual curiosity that personal statements and interviews require. This cannot be manufactured in Year 13; it must be genuine and it must develop over time.
UCAT preparation begins in the summer term or early summer holidays. For most students, three to four months of consistent preparation is the minimum to perform competitively.
Work experience planning begins. For Medicine, arranging clinical shadowing takes time and requires lead time, particularly for international students outside the NHS system.
University research takes place. Understanding the differences between institutions, courses, offer levels, and admissions processes helps inform the five-choice strategy.
Summer between Year 12 and Year 13
UCAT registration opens in May and the test runs from late July through September. Students sitting in July or August are in the strongest position; those leaving it until late September have minimal time between their result and the October deadline.
Personal statement drafting begins. Not the final version; the thinking and raw material behind it. What has genuinely interested this student about their subject? What have they read, observed, or questioned? These conversations take time.
For Oxbridge applicants: UAT-UK test registration opens in July. Tests must be booked and sat in October. Preparation materials are available on the UAT-UK website.
September to 15 October, Year 13
Predicted grades are set by teachers in early September. These are the grades that appear on the UCAS application and determine which universities will make offers. The trajectory that informs those predictions has been established throughout Year 12.
The personal statement is finalised. For the new 2026 UCAS format, this means three focused sections totalling 4,000 characters, each answering a specific question. It should be reviewed, revised, and checked against the requirements of all five chosen courses.
Admissions tests for Oxbridge courses are sat between 12 and 16 October.
The UCAS application is submitted by 15 October at 18:00 UK time.
The Most Common Mistake
The most common mistake GGA sees from international families is treating the October deadline as a UCAS administrative detail rather than a preparation signal.
A family that discovers in July of Year 13 that their child needs to sit the UCAT, complete work experience, write a Medicine personal statement, and submit a UCAS application by October is not in a recoverable position. Not because the individual tasks are impossible in that timeframe; because doing all of them well in that timeframe is not realistic.
The families who receive competitive offers from medical schools and Oxbridge in January are almost never the ones who started preparing in September. They are the ones who understood what the deadline required and worked backwards from it, beginning the process a year or more in advance.
Understanding the October deadline is not about creating pressure. It is about creating enough time to do this properly. Pressure comes from running out of time. Time is the one thing that cannot be recovered once it is gone.
